Thank you to all who attended the Type 1 and Tech Conference

The event at Swansea University on Saturday 10 November was a resounding success.

The conference, which was organised in partnership with Swansea University and the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru offered people across the UK the opportunity to discover more about the latest innovations and developments in Type 1 management.

A pioneering event

A host of international experts discussed Flash Freestyle Libre, DIY looping, Continuous Glucose Monitors, artificial pancreases, social media, technology and paediatrics, and the #WeAreNotWaiting movement, offering attendees an in-depth insight into new ways of managing life with Type 1.

Those who weren’t able to attend had the chance to watch the entire conference live via our YouTube webcast – a first for Diabetes UK. Almost 200 people tuned into the event from their homes throughout the day.

Speaker Mel Stephenson-Gray, who gave two talks on social media and the benefits of living with Flash, said: “The Type 1 and Technology Conference was so important because technology can be so helpful in managing diabetes and it gives us hope that we’re taking great steps forward in being able to manage the condition.”

Hywel Lewis attended the conference and said: “I found the conference massively informative and entertaining. The quality of the speakers was very impressive, everyone has spoken from personal experience so although there was a lot of useful technical information it was at a level that anyone can understand. I’d recommend attending a conference like this to anybody and I’m looking forward to more Diabetes UK events.”

A welcoming and positive environment

Our National Director Dai Williams said: “The Type 1 and Tech conference was the first of its kind in the UK, and it was a huge success.

“On behalf of the Diabetes UK Cymru team, I would like to thank all of the fantastic speakers who offered their time and expertise, the teams at Swansea University and Diabetes Research Unit Cymru for their hard work and dedication, and of course all of the people who attended and made the conference such a welcoming, positive environment.

“We all learnt so much throughout the day and hope that this will be the first of many similar events.”
