Rising rates of diabetes highlighted

Rising rates of diabetes have been identified as a particular challenge to the health of people across England.

This is the finding of the Department of Health in its report, the Health Profile of England 2007, out today.

The annual report shows regional comparisons and national trends as well as snapshots of public health and well-being.

“Tackling both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes must be a priority for the Government,” said Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK.

“There are now 2.2 million people in the UK living with the condition and up to a further 750,000 who have Type 2 diabetes but don’t know it, all of whom are potentially facing years of ill health and reduced life expectancy.

“The Government needs to deliver on the aims of its National Service Framework set out in 2004 to ensure that care is consistent across the country. This will help to overcome the unacceptable healthcare inequalities highlighted by today’s findings.”
