Research fund to put research results into clinical practice

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has announced that it will be holding a second round of its diabetes research funding programme, BRIDGES (Bringing Research in Diabetes to Global Environments and Systems) in 2009.

The programme, which was initiated by the IDF and supported by an educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company, aims to provide researchers with the opportunity to ‘translate’ lessons learned from clinical research into ways to help people affected by diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is a worldwide alliance of over 200 diabetes associations, including Diabetes UK, that have come together to enhance the lives of people with diabetes. The Federation is committed to raising global awareness of diabetes, promoting appropriate diabetes care and prevention, and encouraging activities towards finding a cure for the different types of diabetes.

Seeking the best ideas

The IDF’s BRIDGES programme will continue to fund translational research projects in diabetes prevention and treatment, building on its successful first round in 2007. It will seek the best ideas from the global research community based on interventions for the prevention and control of diabetes that have already been proven to be effective in trials.

The initiative will provide funding to help understand, crucially, how these interventions can be made cost effective and sustainable in everyday clinical and public health practice.

Project funding

The second round of funding will take place in 2009 (applications accepted from January to March) and will support two types of projects:

  • Short term projects for a maximum of USD 65,000 and for up to 2 years
  • Long term projects for a maximum of USD 400,000 and for up to 3 years

The BRIDGES programme is currently supporting 11 projects worldwide, and details of these and the application guidelines can be found online
