Call for research proposals

Diabetes UK is calling on researchers to put forward proposals for funding of high-quality, ambitious, innovative and collaborative research to help overcome barriers to good diabetes care and supported self-management. This research will make a real difference to people with diabetes.

£6m investment to develop better treatments

It will form a crucial part of Diabetes UK’s plan to target research to areas of importance as well as form part of its wider plan to invest around £6m in 2011 to develop better treatments and prevention strategies, and ultimately find a cure for diabetes.

Diabetes UK is particularly welcoming applications which give specific consideration to the following topics:

  • Communities or constituencies with a record of poor engagement
  • Perspectives of healthcare professionals, as well as those of people with diabetes
  • Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of existing approaches
  • Overcoming barriers to patient engagement with good care
  • Overcoming barriers to achieving good glycaemic control in Type 1 diabetes.

Translating findings into benefits for people with diabetes

Dr Iain Frame, Director of Research at Diabetes UK, said, "By funding research through this call, we aim to help translate the findings into benefits for people with diabetes as effectively and quickly as possible.

"A call in this area of work could have very immediate benefits for people living with diabetes."

Anne Middleton is Vice-Chair of the Science and Research Advisory Group, which helped to develop the call. Anne said, "People who live their lives with diabetes have played a significant role in developing Diabetes UK's research strategy.

"We are especially excited by this particular call for research which we hope will help us overcome the barriers we face in our day-to-day lives, namely achieving effective self-management and receiving good diabetes care."
