Diabetes UK on Facebook and beyond

With over 5,000 members, or 'fans', the Diabetes UK pages on social networking site Facebook have proven increasingly popular over recent months.

Our Facebook page is our fastest growing online community. We regularly gain 100 new fans per week. Users welcome the chance to find out about and comment on our work, and to provide mutual support to help them manage their diabetes.

"Now I am not alone"

Typical comments left on the Diabetes UK Facebook 'wall' show the forum is a useful source of information and advice for more and more people:

“I just found this siteI’m really happy I could do with chatting to people with Type 1.”

“To have no-one in my circle of friends or family who has diabetes or who understand or can relate to this battle can be isolating[Now] I am not alone.”

Other social media

Diabetes UK has branched out into all the main social media sites over the past 18 months, in an effort to reach the people who need us - by setting up pages on the sites they use every day. Here are the main places you'll  find us.




Twitter, a real-time online short messaging service (140 characters) is fast becoming the first port-of-call for many who want status updates from individuals and organisations. Famous users include Stephen Fry.


Diabetes UK’s Twitter news feed is gaining an average of five new followers a day and continues to grow.

Myspace and Bebo

The Myspace and Bebo social networks are most popular with young people. Diabetes UK has a group on each site aimed at young people living with diabetes, tying in with our My life sites, and a team of young people blogging regularly about the their lives.

Diabetes UK’s YouTube channel contains 40+ videos about our work. These include virals such as ‘The Bendy Bus’ about Type 1 diabetes, interviews and educational videos.

Virtual worlds

Second Life

Diabetes UK launched its presence in the virtual 3-D world of Second Life in 2008. The charity launched both its headquarters (pictured) and its Silent Assassin awareness campaign in the virtual world, which boasts 15 million+ ‘residents’.



Visitors can access Diabetes UK information and materials, contact our Careline counsellors or simply relax in the garden, watching the hummingbirds fly by.

Join our online communities

"Facebook is not only a new place to promote fundraising and awareness-raising events, and share news stories, information or developments in diabetes care," said Amanda Neylon, Digital Media Manager at Diabetes UK.

"Our presence on the social networking site, and in other forms of social media, has also helped us to reach new audiences and engage in dialogue with our supporters.

"This way, we can offer even more people with diabetes, their friends and relatives, the chance to share their experiences of living with diabetes and to offer advice and support to one another."
