Diabetes UK supporter Melanie C wins Tesco's Mum of the Year award

Diabetes UK has welcomed celebrity supporter Melanie C’s Tesco’s celebrity Mum of the Year award win.

The former Spice Girl was named as the retailer’s celebrity Mum of the Year at an awards ceremony in London, which honoured women heavily involved in charity work. The ceremony will be televised on Channel 5 on Mothers' Day, Sunday 10 March.

Diabetes UK ambassador

Melanie, who is mother to four-year-old Scarlet, is an ambassador for Diabetes UK and was recognised for the work she does to support to the charity.

Melanie’s brother, Paul O’Neill, now aged 33, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 24, and Melanie has supported the charity’s campaigns such as its 4 Ts campaign to raise awareness of the main signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.

"Fantastic contribution"

Barbara Young, Diabetes UK Chief Executive, said, "We are delighted Melanie C has been named Tesco celebrity Mum of the Year. Melanie is a wonderful mum and a great role model and has made a fantastic contribution to Diabetes UK.

"Melanie’s support has helped generate huge public interest in diabetes and the work that Diabetes UK does to support people with the condition, which help improve the lives of people with diabetes and work towards a future without diabetes."

"Incredible work"

Melanie C said, "I decided to get involved with Diabetes UK because I know first-hand how serious and life-affecting the condition can be to sufferers and those around them. The work of the charity is incredible – it has such an impact for diabetes sufferers and their families."

National Charity Partnership

Melanie’s win follows the announcement that Diabetes UK will be the Tesco National Charity Partner for 2013–14. The partnership aims to raise up to £10 million, which will be used to make life changing differences to adults and children affected by all types of diabetes.

Melanie C said, "I’m delighted Diabetes UK has been chosen as the Tesco National Charity Partner for 2013–14. Diabetes UK’s partnership with Tesco will help improve the lives of the three million people who have to live with diabetes and its effects every day. My brother has Type 1 diabetes so I know how serious the condition can be; the work that the charity does to raise awareness and support people affected with diabetes is amazing."
