Help us protect diabetes services

The NHS is facing one of the biggest shake-ups it has ever known as the Government’s new Health and Social Care Bill plans to radically change how NHS services are designed and delivered across the UK. These changes have not been made law yet, but they soon could be.

Diabetes UK is concerned that some of the proposals within the Health Bill are not strong enough to protect crucial diabetes services. We are working hard to raise awareness of these issues, and urgently need your help to make sure our voice is heard.

How could the reforms affect people with diabetes?

Diabetes UK welcomes the emphasis the Government is placing on patient involvement within the new Health and Social Care Bill. However, we believe the requirements within the Bill needed to improve patient involvement need to be strengthened in order to have a positive impact.

We are also concerned that new proposals could mean different aspects of diabetes care could be commissioned by different healthcare bodies. This could have a detrimental impact on people with diabetes and could result in health services failing to join up around the patient. Again, stronger requirements need to be made to ensure this does not happen.

How you can help

The Health Bill is due to be debated in Parliament in a few weeks and many MPs have not yet made up their minds about whether they agree with the proposals. Diabetes UK is campaigning with other health charities for changes to be made that would make sure the NHS really is accountable to the people who use it – that’s you, your friends, your family.

We’re working with MPs and Peers from across Parliament to raise our concerns and we need your help to make sure our message is heard. You can do this by emailing your MP and asking them to support people with diabetes by speaking up at the debate.

The more MPs we reach, the stronger and louder our voice will be. This is your chance to shape the future of diabetes services and care for the 2.8 million people with diabetes in the UK.
