National Paediatric Diabetes Survey - February 2009

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) is conducting a survey of hospitals to find out the number of children and young people (CYP) under the age of 18 in England who have diabetes.

The survey will be conducted electronically in order to complete it as quickly as possible. The survey will be sent separately to adult services and paediatric services in every hospital in England on 9 February 2009 asking them to complete it on behalf of their paediatric colleagues at the hospital by 20 February 2009.

A separate survey will be sent to the lead clinician for adult diabetes care so that teenagers who are transferred to adult services are captured.

About the project

The project is a collaboration between the RCPCH, the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED), the Association of Children’s Diabetes Clinicians (ACDC), the National Diabetes Support Team (NDST), and the National Diabetes Information Service. It is supported by the National Clinical Directors for Diabetes and for Children, Young People and Maternity at the Department of Health.

The survey has been put together with the help of clinicians and attempts to meet the project objectives in as few questions as possible.

Potential for national register of childhood diabetes

The project is an important first step to provide the data to inform the commissioning of resources for diabetes care and drive service improvements. As well as establishing the total number of children and young people with diabetes, the project will inform the development of the next stage of the paediatric National Diabetes Audit and discussions on the potential for a national register of childhood diabetes.
