New app to support good diabetes control

To help make diabetes management easier, Diabetes UK has created Diabetes UK Tracker, an app for iPhone and iPod Touch. The app provides users with a place to store and monitor their data and get a better idea about what might be affecting their blood glucose levels.

Record vital data

Developed by a range of experts including people with diabetes, clinical specialists and user experience professionals, the app allows users not only to record vital data, but also share it with their healthcare professionals and visualise their results across days and weeks.

As well as being able to log blood glucose levels and store blood pressure and blood fat recordings, the Diabetes UK Tracker also allows users to track how they are feeling to help recognise patterns. Users can then save specific records as 'talking points' to use as reminders in healthcare appointments. This unique feature will help people get the most out of their appointments by setting their own agenda of their everyday concerns.

Taking the daily chore out of logging levels

Diabetes UK Clinical Advisor, Libby Dowling, said, "Tracking information to manage diabetes

can be an overwhelming task. Blood glucose levels, insulin and carbohydrates are just some of the factors that need to be considered on a daily basis. Diabetes is a serious condition and, if not treated effectively, can lead to devastating complications such as blindness, heart disease and amputation.

"The Diabetes UK Tracker app is aimed at helping people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes better manage their condition and is an example of how technology can help people with diabetes minimise the risk of complications. It is designed to be quick and simple to use, taking the daily chore out of logging levels."

Diabetes UK created the app with digital agencyPublic Zone. Jonathan Simmons, MD of Public Zone, said, "Diabetes UK commissioned us to work on a concept for an iPhone app that would be genuinely useful to people with diabetes. Through listening to the charity’s active online communities on Facebook and Twitter, we were able to develop an app with a visual interface that can help inspire people with diabetes to manage and track their condition wherever and whenever they choose."
