Student warms up to run 14 marathons in 14 days

A Somerset student is getting ready to lace up her running shoes and undertake the biggest challenge of her life when she attempts to complete 14 marathons in just 14 days in support of Diabetes UK.

Maggi Broadbent, 21, from Dinnington, Hinton St George, is due to take on her ‘Maggi’s Marathons’ challenge on Friday 13 August. She will then run 26 miles every day for the next two weeks around different areas of South Somerset before returning to Dinnington on Thursday 26 August for her homecoming lap. She’s hoping her fundraising challenge will raise £1,000 for the charity.

Running to raise awareness

Maggi, who is studying at the University of Manchester, decided to start fundraising for Diabetes UK after discovering one of her close friends, Rosie Allan, has Type 1 diabetes. Up until that point Maggi had little knowledge about what diabetes was and it wasn’t until the pair moved in together that she realised how serious the condition can be.

Maggi said: "I don’t think I really understood what impact diabetes can have on someone’s life. Living with Rosie has opened my eyes to what living with diabetes really means and the difficulties it can entail.

"Rosie is really good at managing her health and most people don’t even know she has diabetes, but there have been times when she’s been caught off guard. I remember one time when her blood glucose level suddenly dropped when we were walking through the park and I have to admit it was pretty scary. I’d never seen anything quite like it and that’s what made me want to do something to help make more people become aware of the condition."

Maggi was inspired to take on the challenge after watching Eddie Izzard’s recent marathon challenge for charity. She has already raised £600 from her challenge. You can help Maggi reach her fundraising target by making a donation on her Just Giving page
