Diabetes UK speaks at NHS health and care innovation expo

On Thursday 8 September, Robin Hewings, Head of Policy at Diabetes UK attended the yearly NHS health and care innovation expo to speak about new models of care for diabetes across England.

The 30 minute presentation focussed on how the NHS can help more people manage their diabetes better by working as a whole system, rather than separately. Integrated systems can also help people get better care to prevent complications from developing.

Robin said: "I'm very pleased that we were asked to speak at this event as it was a great opportunity for Diabetes UK to talk about how we think diabetes healthcare can be improved, and also discuss what the main issues and barriers are when it comes to providing support to those who have been diagnosed.

Making this happen is not straightforward but those areas that have done it deliver good value to their patients

"It was also really interesting to see all the different types of people who came along and opened a wider conversation around diabetes in general."

On top of working closely with NHS England and Public Health England to deliver the national diabetes prevention programme, we'll continue to work with the government to support people with diabetes as well as those at risk.

Robin also said: "It's great that the government are focussing on diabetes a lot more, but there's still a bit of work to do before they're delivering much higher standards of diabetes care across the country."
