Cambridge couple to hold black tie event to raise money for Diabetes UK

A Cambridge couple are planning an amazing evening of dancing, dinner andfundraisingto raise money for Diabetes UK.

Sam and Natalie Wilson (pictured above) from Willingham are holding the Casino and Black Tie evening on Saturday 19 August at Swavesey Windmill.

The evening will consist of a selection of casino tables, where guests can play with pretend money. Singer Kyle Chater will be performing and there will be a buffet, DJ and also a raffle.

Sam, who was diagnosed withType 1 diabetesat the age of 12, said: “This evening is all about raising awareness for this silent condition. It is not a condition that you would guess people have just by sight, however it doesn’t mean that those who have it don’t struggle to live it..

“One of my biggest concerns is that people associate Type 1 diabetes with something you acquire from eating sugary foods and living a bad lifestyle. This is not always the case withType 2 diabetes, but it is never the case with Type 1 diabetes.

“Living with Type 1 diabetes is by no means a walk in the park, having to mould your work, social and physical activities around balancing your blood sugars can be a nightmare at times. Having to inject, and test by blood glucose a minimum of 5 times a day can become tedious, however if not carried out it can lead to severeconsequences.

“Having lived with diabetes for 14 years I have always been determined to look after myself with very little help from others, however this changed when I met my wife Natalie. She wanted to know everything about my diabetes, what to do and when to do it.

“It was difficult for me to let her in, as I had coped so long without help. Having Natalie beside me, checking what I am doing and offering advice is amazing. I can happily say we are conquering diabetes together. August marks our first wedding anniversary, I can gladly say having Natalie in my life has helped massively."

Raising money for Diabetes UK has always been in the back of my mind, and I have done small things such as sponsored walks in the past, however this time I wanted to go big! It’s important to me that we raise as much money as possible in order to help the research team get closer to finding a cure.
