There is nothing we can do to prevent Type 1 diabetes. But around three in five cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and being active.

Anyone can get it. Type 2 diabetes is a serious health condition. It starts gradually, usually later in life, and because the symptoms may not be so obvious it might be years before you learn that you have it.
Did you know?
Doctors may use terms such as prediabetes, borderline diabetes, impaired glucose regulation or non-diabetic hyperglycaemia to describe how serious it is to have higher than normal blood sugar levels. This can be confusing. It doesn’t mean you have Type 2 diabetes. All these terms mean the same thing – that you’re more at risk of getting it in the future.
