Diabetes UK and Burton Albion Community Trust raise awareness of the importance of foot care

Diabetes UK has joined forces with Burton Albion Football Club and Burton Albion Community Trust to help local people living with diabetes look after their feet.

There are more than 20 diabetes-related amputations every day, but many of these could be prevented with the right knowledge, care and quick treatment.

The free event is hosted by the Diabetes UK’s Burton voluntary group and Burton Albion Community Trust at the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday 19 September from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Prof Fran Game, consultant diabetologist at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will open the event and will discuss diabetes care in the area and answer questions.

There will be two demonstrations focusing on how people can check their feet properly, carried out by podiatrists and a diabetes practice nurse.

Katy Cook, Diabetes UK Midlands Improving Care manager, said: “There are more than 140 diabetes-related amputations a week in England, yet up to 80 per cent could be prevented through improved foot care services and better patient knowledge.

“This event is great way to raise awareness of the importance of good foot care. Preventing foot ulcers and treating them quickly if they do develop is crucial in avoiding amputation.”

John Bridges, from the Burton Diabetes UK group said: “This is our 4th Annual Public Event and we are indebted for the support from the Burton Albion Community Trust, in particular John Widdowson. We have had a tremendous response from exhibitors and speakers who have been invited.

“Our aim is to highlight the effect diabetes has on one’s feet and give people information on self-examination and a voice on what diabetes care they should be receiving from their medical teams.”

“We are proud to work alongside Diabetes UK to help raise awareness of the condition among our players, staff and supporters.”

John Widdowson, Health and Inclusion Manager, Burton Albion Community Trust

“Raising awareness and providing information on Diabetes is something we as a trust fully support as developing healthier communities and improving physical wellbeing are key aims within our strategy. Working in partnership with Diabetes UK allows us to deliver our outcomes and continue to help and support the community," added John Widdowson.

The foot care event is open to anyone living with diabetes or caring for someone with the condition. It will take place on Tuesday 19 September from 6pm to 8.30pm in The Albion Suite, Burton Albion Pirelli Stadium, Princess Way, Burton upon Trent, DE13 0AR.
