Board of Trustees

Could you be the next Diabetes UK Trustee?

We will have a vacancy from July 2013 on our 12-member Board of Trustees.

We are looking for notably exceptional candidates with the commitment, experience and networks to promote the vital work of Diabetes UK with key individuals and institutions. You will bring a background of distinction from your current areas of activity and have a demonstrable personal interest in diabetes.

We aim to have Trustees from across the UK, and we are keen to increase our Board representation from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups. Applications from younger professionals are also very welcome.

We welcome applicants who are enthusiastic about Diabetes UK’s work, who think strategically and who can contribute to the development and oversight of the charity as part of a team. Through your work, and with your personal knowledge and experience, you will be able to contribute to the charity’s impact on the lives of people with diabetes.

As a Trustee you are asked to attend six Board meetings a year (usually held in London), plus an annual Away Day. This is a voluntary role but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

For an information pack, please email governance@diabetes.org.uk or call the Governance Team on 020 7424 1000. The deadline for applications is 15 May 2013. Interviews will be held in London on 13 June 2013.

About the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Charity. The Trustees are responsible for:

  • Safeguarding the good name and values of the organisation
  • Acting in the best interest of the Charity
  • The overall policy, direction and control of the organisation
  • Shaping strategy
  • Ensuring financial stability
  • Improving performance.

The Board normally meets around seven times per year. The Board has five committees which help it to exercise its role and responsibilities more effectively; these committees are the Finance Committee, Audit & Risk Committee, Research Committee, Governance & Nominations Committee and Remuneration Committee.

The Board’s membership includes people with diabetes, their carers, healthcare professionals and researchers. Each of the four nations of the UK is represented, as are a range of ages and cultural backgrounds. Collectively, this gives the Board the authority and perspective it needs to act in the best interests of the diabetes community.
