Diabetes UK statement on death of fundraiser during Channel swim

A woman has tragically died whilst taking part in a Channel swim raising funds for Diabetes UK and Rainbows children’s hospice.

Ms Taylor had previously undertaken a number of open-water swimming challenges, including swimming the Channel as part of a Diabetes UK relay team, and described this solo swim as a challenge "tougher than Everest".

Barbara Young, Chief Executive at Diabetes UK, said, "We are extremely sad to hear of the tragic death of Susan Taylor during her Channel Swim, which she organised independently to raise funds for us.

"We have spoken to Susan’s family and have offered our support and our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts are with Susan’s family at this sad time."

Update - 19 July

You may have seen news over the last day about a large donation made to both Diabetes UK and Rainbows hospice in Susan's memory.

Susan's family were delighted when news of a donation pledge of £300,000 to the two charities was announced. Unfortunately, it would appear that this pledge was bogus since the funds have failed to materialise in the charities accounts.

Paul Amadi, Director of Fundraising for Diabetes UK, said: “I can confirm that it now appears the pledge of a £300,000 to us and Rainbows in Susan’s memory was not a genuine one.

This is obviously extremely upsetting for Susan’s family at a time when they are still struggling to come to terms with their loss and we will do anything we can to support them.”
