Volunteering with Diabetes UK Scotland

Volunteering with Diabetes UK Scotland is a rewarding experience.  You can join us in lots of different ways in fundraising, campaigning, supporting adults and families, or helping in our Glasgow office. We are always looking for volunteers to help with our family weekends and roadshows. You can also help locally with our voluntary groups.

We are also introducing internships in 2010 where you could support our Scotland wide work in media, policy, care, volunteer development or fundraising.

Volunteer Awards

Every year we recognise the great work all our volunteers do for Diabetes UK Scotland.  The ceremony is held towards the end of the year and we welcome nominations from everyone.  If you know someone who has done something special for people with diabetes in Scotland we would love to hear about what they have done.

John Ireland Award

John Ireland was an eminent Diabetologist at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow who died suddenly and tragically in November 1987 at the age of 55. He is remembered for his part in development of the first pen device for insulin administration, the Penject and additionally as a co-author with the late Arnold Bloom of “A Colour Atlas of Diabetes”. He was well known and respected by diabetic physician colleagues throughout Britain and at the time of his death had just completed his stint as the first trail blazing editor of Diabetic Medicine, a medical publication of International repute and of course the journal of Diabetes UK.

The Scottish Committee of the British Diabetic Association (now Diabetes UK) under the chairmanship of Dr Ray Newton decided to remember John Ireland’s contributions by representing an annual award to an individual who has served the diabetes community in Scotland with distinction.

Diabetes UK Scotland would also like to thank Steve Birnie from Novo Nordisk who has always supported the John Ireland Award.
