Together Type 1 in the South East Coast and London Region

Youth Worker Rosie (centre) with our Young Leaders (L-R) Natalie, Freya, Aimee and Katie

Living with type 1 diabetes can be scary, overwhelming, and at times lonely.

Our youth-led projects aim to change that. They are dedicated communities for young people to share experiences, learn new skills, and help shape campaigns for better care and support.

But most importantly, it’s a chance to connect and have fun with people who know what it really feels like to live with diabetes.

Eibhlin and Rosie head up the South East Coast and London team's Youth Programme, known as Together Type 1, which is funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation. Together, they are recruiting and supporting a group of Young Leaders to deliver peer support.

They're also creating a programme of virtual and in-person events, engaging with healthcare professionals and designing social media content to support and positively impact the health and wellbeing of other young people with type 1 diabetes

Young leaders attended the first ever ‘Together Type 1’ networking event

Five young leaders from across the South East Coast and London travelled to Manchester on Saturday 30th September to attend the first ever ‘Together Type 1’ networking event and celebrate the first year of the youth programme.

The youth programme, now under its new name Together Type 1 (formerly known as Our Lives, Our Choices, Our Voices) and funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, brought together young people from all over the country for a day of workshops, networking, and excitement. Young leaders Katie, Aimee, Ellie, Freya, and Natalie all enjoyed mixing with other young leaders and talking about everything from the highs and the lows of living with type 1 diabetes to their hobbies and interests.

They also got to take part in workshops focused on social media, campaigning and coaching skills, all of which are vital to developing their young leader roles and personal skills. As the day ended and they were all equipped with their new merchandise (see pic), the young leaders came away with big smiles on their faces, new friendships, and lots of ideas for the coming year.

Overall, a fantastic experience for all involved. If you or someone you know is aged 11-25 years old and would like to find out more about the Together Type 1 programme, please contact our youth worker Rosie: Rosie.Newton@diabetes.org.uk
