Bridget Wilkins was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1951 at the age of nine.

She grew up at a time when her family planted their own vegetables and prepared dishes at home directly from fresh produce. Bridget continues that tradition today by having an allotment and cooking at home most of the time.

Bridget tells how she is a firm believer in making food from scratch and keeping processed food to a minimum to help her manage her diabetes.

In this audio slideshow, Bridget recalls her father's vegetable garden and how it influenced her own approach to healthy eating and cooking.
