Daring duo take on peak challenge

Two intrepid young climbers took on the daunting challenge of the Welsh 3 Peaks to raise funds.

Rebecca Rawle, 12, and Maddy Miller, 13, nicknamed Boo and Moo, set out to take on the Welsh 3 Peaks during February to raise money for Diabetes UK children’s and families local group Supporting Kernow’s Young Diabetics, based in Truro.

Joined by Jennifer Rawle and Julie Valentine, their first climb was up the Pyg track to the summit of Snowdon. Battling through bad weather, both girls gave it everything to get as far as they could before having to turn back when plummeting temperatures of -17 and 50 MPH winds made reaching the top impossible.

Undeterred, they headed to Cadair Idris for day 2 of the challenge, climbing from the lake at the bottom of Cadair Idris up to the ridge. This time, the weather was on their side and they walked all along the ridge which was a challenging series of ups and downs. After reaching the highest peak of Penygadair they began the arduous descent. Mum Jennifer said this was “very unforgiving on the knees and toes…both girls certainly earned their tea that night!”

Day 3 saw the girls take on Pen y Fan but sadly due to injury Maddy had to pull out. Both girls agreed that Becky would finish for both of them and she made it to the top to complete the challenge.

Jennifer said “Becky and Maddy gave this challenge absolutely everything they had. They climbed in snow, ice, wind, fog, rain and nope, no sun! It was a real shame that Snowdon’s summit couldn’t be reached but they walked and climbed for 6.5 miles in all and were out on Snowdon for 5.5 hours. With the conditions they climbed in they are winners and finishers in my mind! Having done this challenge with Becky and Maddy proud doesn’t come close to how I feel about them.”
