Diabetes UK Newry Support Group raises £201,000

Our Newry Support Group recently announced that they raised a staggering £201,000 raised over 12 years.

Over those 12 years the group has helped support numerous of our funded research projects. The group has also raised money to fund Type 1 events for children and young people to learn to manage their condition with the support of healthcare professionals.

Sally Griffin, a retired Diabetes Specialist Nurse who has been involved with the Diabetes UK Newry Support Group for many years, said, “I am so proud of all that we have achieved. Although this is a fantastic amount raised over 12 years, the group has actually been active much longer than that, it would be closer to 40 years in existence in one form or another. The group is steeped in history and we are delighted to celebrate yet another milestone.

“I know from my years as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse just how difficult living with diabetes is, especially for families with children and young people learning to live with it. We have  been in a privileged position to offer help and support, and sometimes, just provide a listening ear, for people through the good times and the tough times. Our peer support has been fundamental in encouraging and helping one another. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the years, attending our meetings and events and also for all the fundraising for the local diabetes community.” Sally

As well as ongoing fundraising efforts, the Diabetes UK Newry Support Group provides excellent support through their regular meetings for anyone affected by diabetes and has organised many events to help raise the £201,000 total.

Our National Fundraiser, Naomi Breen, said, “The Diabetes UK Newry Support Group works tirelessly to bring support and help to local families and we are so proud of all of their achievements. They have raised an amazing amount of money and are driven by their passion to help others living with diabetes. We are excited to see the busy schedule the group has planned when they reconvene in September and we are looking forward to the people of Newry continuing their unwavering support.”
