Evie's triple Swim22 challenge

Nine-year-old from Wigan swims the ‘English Channel’ over three times for Diabetes UK

Evie Cutter, from Hindley, took on the swimming challenge of the year, to raise awareness of diabetes because her grandad has lived with the condition for over 60 years.

Evie, a pupil at St Benedict’s Primary School, has completed 70 miles – more than triple the usual distance of Diabetes UK’s Swim22 challenge. She initially planned to complete 44 miles. However, she ploughed through this distance in just two months, so decided to push herself even further.

Her younger sister Alivia, 5, mum Leigh, 34 and dad Lee 33, also helped her with the challenge. They have completed another 22 miles, which will take their combined distance to 92 miles.

Evie, who is part of the Wigan Swimming Club, says her inspiration for taking part in the challenge is her grandad, Andy, who has lived with Type 1 diabetes for over 60 years. She said: "I would swim all around the world for my Grandad if it would help people learn more about diabetes. I have loved the Swim22 challenge, I am going to push myself for 100miles next year.”

Leigh, Evie’s mum, said: “I am overwhelmed by the girls’ achievements and determination. Evie is so focused, and Alivia’s little legs just keep going. I am so proud of my little mermaids.”
