Megan is a slope superstar

A nine-year-old with Type 1 diabetes celebrated her success at the Welsh School Skiing championships in Llangranog this month.

Megan Ingle (pictured right) is from Gwynedd and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes six years ago. She joined her brother Merlin and schoolmate Rufus on the slopes, and the trio claimed the Kelly Elson Trophy for fastest primary school team.

Megan also came fourth in the under-12s competition and scooped fourth place in the competition overall.

Hitting the slopes

Megan has been ski racing for several years and has competed in the Welsh Alpine championships in Switzerland twice. She is also a keen climber and gymnast.

Megan is not the only sporting ace in her family who has Type 1 diabetes. Her mum, Manja, was diagnosed almost 40 years ago, but has not let it stop her from working as a dance teacher and cycling around the world!. Megan’s uncle also has Type 1 diabetes and has competed in triathlons and climbing events.

A story of victory

Proud mum Manja said; “Megan has Type 1 diabetes, but when the newspapers wrote about her skiing trophy they didn’t mention it. The story was all about her victory, and that's how it should be.

While it's natural to worry about blood glucose numbers and all the things Megan may have to face, life is so much more than diabetes. Work with it, work around it but don't let it hold you back.”
