Omagh hosts Living with Diabetes Day

Diabetes UK Omagh Support Group is hosting a ‘Living with Diabetes Day’ on Saturday, 10 November in the Silverbirch Hotel in Omagh, 10am-3pm.

Local Western Trust healthcare professionals, Dietitians Siobhan Monaghan and Lesley Hamilton, will provide workshops on diabetes and diet as well as diabetes treatment pathways. Diabetes UK Northern Ireland National Care Advisor, Sara Carse, will also lead a session on explaining the many aspects of diabetes care which will be relevant to people living with either Type 1 or Type 2.

The day will also include a mindfulness session to highlight the importance of recognising emotional wellbeing when living with a lifelong condition.

Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly. If not managed well, both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can lead to devastating complications. There are over 100,000 people living with the condition in Northern Ireland with approximately 90 per cent of those living with Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes UK Volunteer Development Manager Jade Knowles said, ‘Diabetes is serious but, with the right treatment, knowledge and support people living with diabetes can lead a long, full and healthy life.

‘The Omagh Living with diabetes day offers an opportunity to meet with others living with the condition in the area and find out more about how to manage it.

‘The event is free and open to everyone living with diabetes including those newly diagnosed or who have been living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes for many years, family members, and parents of children with diabetes. ’

To register for the Omagh Living with Diabetes day free event (lunch included) please email today or call 028 9066 6646. The event will end with an opportunity to ask the experts any questions about diabetes.
