Celebrity chef James Tanner hosted a sizzling fundraising evening at the Café Royal in London on World Diabetes Day (14 November). With a guest list of nearly 200 people, the 'Tasty Tanner' event was a huge success.
Guests were welcomed with a champagne reception and feasted on a delightful three course meal of Parma ham and pesto puff pastry, braised rump of lamb and vanilla brulée.
Later in the evening, James took to the stage for a cooking demonstration and caused quite a stir! He made a sizzling sauté chicken liver dish and a warm chocolate and cherry fondant.
Jill Daley, who lost her sight to diabetic retinopathy in her 20s, gave a very emotive speech about living with Type 1 diabetes. Jill, a 30-year-old DJ for Insight Radio for the blind, gave an inspirational account of her life to a very moved audience.
The night finished with a fabulous auction that raised an amazing £12,500. Among the lots were a trip to New York with BA Business Class flights and three nights at the 5-star Mandarin Oriental, exclusive Arsenal Diamond Club tickets, and a bottle of House of Commons whiskey signed by Tony Blair.
Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, closed the night by announcing the grand fundraising total for the evening of a staggering £58,000.
