‘Circle D’, a Kent support group set up by Diabetes UK volunteer Shelley Bennett for 18- to 30-year-olds living with diabetes, has reached its two-year milestone.
Shelley created the group after attending a Diabetes UK 3D (Diabetes, Diagnosis, Discussion) training course, which gave her the skills she needed.
The group began as a humble support group where young people with diabetes could meet together and share their experiences. However, after additional funding, ‘Circle D’ was able to run an open day and a diabetes awareness day as well as print ‘Circle D’ leaflets, badges and t-shirts.
Making a difference
Support, socialising, fundraising and awareness-raising
‘Circle D’ now has its own website -www.circledrocks.co.uk- Facebook group and Twitter page. It has become a group which supports, socialises, fundraises and ultimately raises awareness of diabetes in the local area.
“I am so grateful to Diabetes UK for allowing me to volunteer, as I have been able to make a significant difference to so many young people like me in my area as well as all over the UK,” said Shelley.
“As a result, I now work for the company that provides the 3D course for Diabetes UK (Successful Diabetes), and have gone full circle and co-facilitated the course, which is a big achievement for me.
Become a Diabetes UK volunteer
“I would thoroughly recommend becoming a volunteer for Diabetes UK. I am excited as to what the future holds for Circle D and me personally.”
Verity Steddon, Volunteer Development Manager at Diabetes UK, added: “Shelley has done a fantastic job in making ‘Circle D’ successful.
“This is a wonderful example of the difference the 3D course can make to individuals and subsequently to other people with diabetes in their local area.
“Diabetes UK is grateful to the support of local diabetes groups such as ‘Circle D’ for their fundraising efforts and their commitment to raising people’s awareness of diabetes.”
