Diabetes is Serious – Scotland

In Scotland, we’re working hard to make sure that people with diabetes can get the care they need. Many people living with diabetes have still not been seen by their healthcare teams during the coronavirus pandemic, which is deeply concerning.

In December, we launched our Diabetes is Serious campaign in Scotland, highlighting the serious disruption many people with diabetes have faced in their care. Only around one in 10 adults with diabetes in Scotland received all of their essential annual checks, also called care processes. This backlog of care is putting lives in danger, and why we’re taking action.

What does the report say?

Our ‘Diabetes is Serious – Scotland’ report outlines the experiences people with diabetes have had during the coronavirus pandemic in Scotland. In it, we make recommendations to the Scottish Government to address the significant gaps and inequalities that remain in diabetes care and prevention.

We found that:

  • People with diabetes devastatingly accounted for 20% of hospital deaths in Scotland during the first wave of the pandemic.

  • Only about 10% of over 18s receiving all key care processes they need during the pandemic.

  • Around 90% of the adult population in Scotland do not have access to tech.

“My NHS care has been amazing but it has been 2 years since I have seen a doctor/nurse in person – just a 5 min phone call in July.”

Our Recommendations to the Scottish Government

  • Ensure people living with diabetes have access to technology that would allow them to manage their condition better.

  • That the Scottish Government future proof our healthcare system to tackle the growing diabetes health crisis.
