In Wales, waiting lists for diabetes technology in some health boards have reached an unacceptable length of 2 years, while others have closed their waiting lists completely as they are full.
We are at a pivotal moment in our campaign for improved access to diabetes technology in Wales. Our recent Tech Can't Wait report has laid bare the critical gaps in support and resources that many individuals living with diabetes face. The stark reality is that access to life-saving technology may be determined by where you live.
Currently, the Welsh Government has committed to implementing new guidelines for Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) systems, yet no dedicated funding has been allocated for this essential technology.
We want the next Welsh Government and Senedd to ensure that every person living with diabetes can access the technologies they need, regardless of their geographic location.
You can get involved by contacting your local candidates to express your concerns about current disparities in access to diabetes technology.
Other ways to get involved:
During the campaigning period, you will likely see local candidates and their teams out and about in your area, knocking on doors, attending and hosting events. We’ve put together some questions you can ask candidates or their teams:
- Equitable Access to Technology: "Given the disparities in access to diabetes technology across different regions in Wales, what specific plans do you and your Party have to ensure that all individuals living with diabetes can access life-saving technology, regardless of their location in Wales?"
- Addressing Waiting Lists: "With waiting lists for several health boards across Wales for diabetes technology currently maxed out at two years, what immediate actions will you take to reduce these wait times and guarantee timely access for everyone who needs it? Will you follow Scotland and England and assign dedicated funding for diabetes technology?"
- Funding Commitment: "What commitments can you make to secure dedicated funding for diabetes technology in Wales, ensuring that necessary resources are available to support all patients and prevent inequities in care due to regional differences? If none, then why should your constituents not have equal access to diabetes technology as their Scottish and English counterparts?"
Together, we can have a positive impact on the future of diabetes care in Wales.
