Our partnership with Abbott

Working together to reduce inequality and help healthcare professionals better support people living with diabetes

The Diabetes UK Continuous Development platform

Abbott are supporting our Continuous Professional Development (CPD) platform for healthcare professionals. The platform offers a series of online courses, accredited by the Royal College of Nursing, aimed at giving healthcare professionals the confidence, skills, and resources to better support people living with diabetes.

Since we launched the first module, Emotional Wellbeing, in June 2021, we’ve received excellent feedback, leading to the development of additional modules in 2022-2023: Understanding Diabetes, Remission, Technology and Medicines and Treatment.

We’re very grateful to Abbott for their support of this vital work, helping healthcare professionals to provide better diabetes care.

Tackling inequalities in diabetes

Based on factors outside their direct control, people with diabetes experience systematic, unfair and avoidable differences in their diabetes care, the treatment they receive and the opportunities they have to lead healthy lives. Abbott are generously supporting our work to tackle the inequalities that exist in diabetes care.

In 2022 Abbott supported our Tackling Inequality in Diabetes Lab,  a bold, bottom-up strategic response to the challenge of improving outcomes for people with diabetes who experience inequalities.

In 2023, Abbott supported our first ever Tackling Inequality Commission which brought together an expert panel to determine the biggest challenges for people with diabetes facing health inequality. The findings from the commission are helping us take the steps we need to support people living with diabetes in areas of deprivation, ensuring that everyone can live in a world where diabetes does no harm. Abbott provided funding, but they had no involvement or influence over the commission.

Stigma market research

Abbott are also supporting our work to address the impact of stigma on people’s health outcomes. We commissioned market research in 2023 to explore the prevalence, experiences and impact of stigmatising attitudes, language and behaviour on those living with diabetes. The findings are helping us better understand the breadth of stigma that people with diabetes face and focus our efforts on reducing it.

Our partnership continues to evolve in other areas too – Abbott were gold sponsors of our Diabetes UK Professional Conference in April 2023.
