10 students from the University of Chester Tennis Club have completed the Vitality Liverpool Half Marathon to raise awareness of diabetes and support people living with the condition.

One of the students who took part in the run, Zac Broad, 21, from Stevenage, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2010.

Zac said: “A number of the team have been affected by diabetes in some way, whether they’ve been diagnosed themselves or have a family member with the condition and know the impact it can have on people’s lives. This is why we wanted to run for Diabetes UK, in order to support people with diabetes.”

Team member Hayley Scott, 23, added: “As a trainee nurse I know how and what effect diabetes can have on people's health and want to help out a great cause in any way I can.”

The run, which took place on Sunday 2April started and ended at the World Heritage site of Pier Head and took in views of some of the city’s most iconic scenery such as the Liver Building and the River Mersey.

The group trained on the streets in and around Chester including on the walls, in Hoole and even into North Wales.

Zac continues: “As well as raising awareness of diabetes and supporting others, as a member of the University of Chester Tennis Club and taking part in this race, I want to show that diabetes doesn’t have to stop you doing anything.”

Maria Whittaker, Diabetes UK Regional Fundraiser said: “We’re extremely grateful for the hard work all the team have put into this challenge to raise funds to help people with diabetes and increase awareness of the condition. Their efforts will help us realise our vision of a world where diabetes can do no harm.”
