Live for It!
Diabetes UK Scotland andEdinburgh International Science Festivalare coming together to offer school students the chance to participate in Live for It!, a new interactive and fun programme of workshops and activities designed to tackle childhood obesity and highlight the possible risks of developing Type 2 diabetes in later life.
Live for It! aims to tackle the problem of childhood obesity head on by engaging with P6-S2 students to show how leading a healthy lifestyle now, can pay off in the future. The programme is designed to tie in with Scotland’s curriculum for excellence in Health and Wellbeing and will initially be delivered to schools in areas of high deprivation in Edinburgh and Glasgow before moving on to other areas of Scotland.
Live for it! is the newest addition to a growing programme of high quality shows and workshops developed and delivered by Edinburgh International Science Festival; the premier science outreach provider in Scotland. Each school participates in four 90 minute sessions during which students explore topics including, diet, cooking, digestion, diabetes and how the body uses energy. The programme comprises three interactive workshops,Eat for it!Eat for it!– where students go on a journey through the digestive system,Go for It!Go for It!where they test blood glucose and learn how our bodies convert food into energy, andCook for It!Cook for It!– all about eating a balanced diet and making healthy food choices. The final session Live for It! allows the students to show off what they have learned through a series of interesting challenges, including Oscar; a life size model patient with exposed organs and a flashing red nose modelled on the ‘Operation’ board game.

Edinburgh International Science Festival has been delivering high quality science education in Scottish schools for over 20 years, visiting more than 60,000 students each year and receiving consistently great feedback.Live for It!Live for It!continues this tradition and gives Diabetes UK Scotland a great opportunity to show children how important it is to live a healthy life now to lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in later life and to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes.
Recognising this innovative work, LifeScan Scotland, Pfizer UK Foundation and Scotmid Co-operative generously supported the partnership and further funds have been raised by Diabetes UK Scotland’s own voluntary groups. This funding allows us to start taking the workshops to 26-28 schools in the summer and autumn terms in 2011 and again in 2013. We have chosen schools in areas of high deprivation, where there is high prevalence of Type 2 diabetes and are currently looking to secure funding to continue the tour in future years to come.
If you are interested in sponsoring Live for It! in 2013, please contact the Fundraising Teamscotlandfundraising@diabetes.org.uk– this could be a great opportunity to have your name associated with an innovative and life changing initiative taking place in schools across Scotland.
We are in the process of developing our plans for taking Live for It! to even more schools. If you would like to register interest in receiving the workshops in 2014, please contact Sarah Ward (email@example.com).
