Andrew Cross is 36 years old and has Type 1 diabetes. He's based in Milton Keynes and is a super fit cyclist. He wears a pump and works as a personal trainer where he has started specialising in diabetes.
I've had diabetes for 28 years. Diabetes has not prevented me from doing anything; in fact it has made me stronger. I've always been involved in fitness and I am now a personal trainer and sports masseur. I enjoy helping people with diabetes and giving them the knowledge that fitness is the number one key to gaining perfect control and living a normal life. Being Type one does not stop me. I am currently road racing and am doing well, finishing consistently in the points. I ride six times a week and compete weekly, hoping to soon gain my second Cat license.
Last time I met Andy, he was a body-building prison officer and we did a little shoot of him in a circus tent. Now he’s a serious road cyclist, three stone lighter and a real expert on diabetes and exercise. We found a quiet country road beyond the endless roundabouts of Milton Keynes and I persuaded him to raise his bike above his head to echo his weight-lifting past.
