Barbara's story: I'm running for my father and my daughter with diabetes

I have always been around diabetes, my late father was type 1. He died from complications relating to poorly controlled diabetes at the age of 51 years somewhat suddenly.

I myself had gestational diabetes and was insulin dependent in my pregnancies.

My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 11 with type 1 diabetes and it has been very difficult for her during her teenage years both socially and emotionally.

Diabetes has always been a way of life for me and as a result I’m very passionate about it. I work in diabetes as my job which I love, helping those who have the condition live a happier and healthier life is a privilege. I would like to promote the importance of Diabetes UK and the invaluable resource it provides for both families and professionals. Working within the community as a diabetes technician I regularly refer to Diabetes UK for up to date guidance and pass this on the patients in the community.

I now work in diabetes care, which I love.

I recently undertook the couch to 5K challenge as a complete non runner and it has been incredibly hard work. The prospect of 10K is somewhat daunting but the rewards for a charity that is very personal to me will inspire me to work towards completing the training and eventually the run to my best ability. Every penny I raise will go towards improving the quality of lives now and in the future.
