Journey with diabetes

Experience with diabetes patients

Working as a clinical academic

Every day in my role as clinical academic at Guy’s Hospital in London I see patients with diabetes with severe cardio-renal vascular conditions.

Research has helped prevent and delay the progression of chronic vascular diabetic complications (these include coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and strokes). We now need to see fewer patients developing end stage renal disease and entering renal replacement programmes with dialysis.

In the last 3-5 years diabetes research has been delivering great inventions and made huge impact in the fight against diabetes and its chronic vascular complications.

We need to develop better solutions and to improve the outcome for patients with diabetes. Research has been delivering great inventions and made huge impact in the fight against diabetes.

Diabetes UK and me

Life as a research expert

Luigi is a member of the Diabetes UK Research Committee which is made up of clinical and scientific diabetes experts.

The Research Committee meets twice a year to make funding decisions on project grant and small grant applications from diabetes researchers. They also make funding recommendations on fellowship and studentship applications.

From time to time, as needed, we also invite people with special expertise onto the Research Committee. We include people affected by diabetes in our research funding decision.
