Our position statement on the use of low or no-calorie sweeteners

Low or no-calorie sweeteners continue to receive much publicity, and controversy remains amongst both consumers and healthcare professionals surrounding their use.

This is in part explained by the inconsistent and sometimes contradictory information that is presented in relation to their safety, role in weight management, and link to other health conditions.

It therefore seems timely to review our 2018 position statement and insight document, and again we, the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) formed a working to consider the role of low or no-calorie sweeteners.

We reviewed the current evidence, and recommendations were provided which have applications across clinical practice, research, policy development, and the food industry. Gaps in research were also identified.
