A social get together for teenagers and young adults who have type 1 diabetes will take place in Hastings this September.

The relaxed drop-in is aimed at 16- to 25-year-olds, their friends and families, and will take place at The Nest, The Old Town Hall, High Street, (TN34 3EW), on Saturday 2 September from 4 - 7pm, including optional activities.

Eibhlin Jones, Youth Coordinator, Diabetes UK South East Coast and London Region, which is behind the event, says:

“Life with type 1 diabetes is complicated - especially if you are young.

“Often the people who understand best are those who are going through the same thing. We would like to invite people to come along, have some free refreshments, chat with other young people with type 1, relax in designated ‘chill-out’ spaces, and take part in freestyle creative activities.”

Some Diabetes UK Young Leaders - volunteers who live with type 1 diabetes - will talk about navigating life with type 1 diabetes during the afternoon.

Eibhlin adds:

“Anyone living with diabetes in Hastings or the surrounding area, plus friends and family are welcome to come along.”

People with type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin. About 8% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. No one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable.

It’s the most common type of diabetes in children and young adults, starting suddenly and getting worse quickly. Type 1 diabetes is treated by daily insulin doses - taken either by injections or via an insulin pump.
