Dartford woman to swim width of the channel for Diabetes UK

Jane Livermore, a semi-retired leaflet dropper from Dartford, is taking part in Swim22, the swimming challenge of the year to spread awareness of diabetes and raise funds for Diabetes UK.

Swim22 participants will cover an incredible 22 miles – the equivalent of crossing the English Channel - in three months. Jane is doing Swim22 because she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2012 and wants to lose weight.

Jane, 59, said: “Swimming is an activity I’ve always enjoyed so I thought this was the perfect challenge for me. I also wanted to help Diabetes UK fund their valuable research. Now it’s a habit and the health benefits have been incredible; I already feel fitter and stronger. I’m training at the moment and go to Fairfield Pool three times a week at 6am. I’m really enjoying it despite the early starts! Later this month, I should be hitting my target of 40 lengths a session three times a week in order to hit the 22 miles by the end of May.

Swimming works wonders

Swimming really works wonders and I hope more local people join us and take part in Swim22.”People taking on the challenge can swim in their local pool alone or, better still, with family, friends or colleagues. The distance can even be split between a team to make it easier for everyone.

Laura Crow, Diabetes UK’s Fundraising Manager in Kent, said: “Swimming is a fantastic way to stay fit and healthy, have fun and set yourself a challenge. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned swimmer, our team will be on hand to offer swimming tips and fundraising advice.

“Every day, around 700 people are diagnosed with diabetes. When diabetes is not well managed it can lead to serious complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputations. Every length you complete and every pound you raise brings us closer to our vision of a world where diabetes can do no harm. So sign up and make a splash!”

Donate to Jane and help her raise £500 towards diabetes.
