Shortage of higher dose Trulicity® (dulaglutide) injections

We have been informed by the manufacturers of the drug Eli Lilly UK that there is a shortage of the higher strengths of Trulicity® — namely the 3.0 and 4.5mg once-weekly injections. This shortage does not affect the lower strength injections of 0.75mg and 1.5mg.

What is Trulicity®?

It is a once-weekly self-administered injectable drug (dulaglutide) used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Why is there a shortage?

Eli Lilly says it’s because of higher-than-expected demand and not as a result of any safety concerns.

What does this mean for people with diabetes?

People with diabetes using Trulicity® (dulaglutide) 0.75 mg and 1.5 mg doses and other Lilly diabetes medicines are not affected.

But if you take 3 mg or 4.5mg doses, your GP surgery will be contacting you to prescribe a different dosage or an alternative. Keep taking your medication as normal.

How long will this problem go on for?

This shortage is expected to last until at least April 2022. Normal supply of the higher strengths Trulicity® injections should be restored by the end of April 2022

What do I need to do?

If you are currently prescribed 3.0 mg or 4.5 mg doses of Trulicity® (Dulaglutide) you are advised to contact your healthcare professional to discuss the appropriate course of action. It is likely you will be switched temporarily to Trulicity® 1.5mg injections once weekly until the supply issue has resolved.

How will It affect my diabetes management?

Studies have shown that the lower dose of Trulicity® is slightly less effective compared to the higher strength doses. Please continue to take the lower strength injections regularly as before. If you feel that your glucose levels are rising or if you have any concerns or you are experiencing any new symptoms, it is very important to speak to your GP surgery or diabetes healthcare team.
