Highlands Resident Raises Over £700 in Swim22 Challenge to Support Diabetes UK

Christine Ritchie, a local resident from the Highlands, Scotland who lives with type 2 diabetes, recently completed our Swim22 challenge, raising an impressive £728 in the process.

The challenge, which involved swimming the equivalent of crossing the English Channel to France and back, aims to raise awareness and funds for diabetes research and support services.

Christine, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January 2010. Reflecting on her surprise diagnosis, Christine said:

"It was a shock to my doctor as well. I hadn't been well, and during tests in hospital, they kept asking if I was diabetic, eventually leading to the diagnosis."

Despite initial shock, Christine found valuable support through organisations like Diabetes Scotland. She highlighted the importance of knowing your risk, information-sharing and participation in various programmes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Christine managed her diabetes through medication, initially relying on metformin. However, due to food allergies, she has now recently shifted to a diet-controlled approach. Notably, her dedication to managing diabetes also includes exercise:

"One of the ways I keep my diabetes in control is through swimming," Christine shared.

She emphasised her commitment, swimming four to five days a week before, during, and after the Swim22 Challenge.

The Swim22 Challenge became a personal triumph for Christine, who completed the 44-mile swim and raised funds for us. The distance is equivalent to swimming the English channel.

She expressed gratitude for the encouragement from local swimmers and the community, as well as the sense of camaraderie she experienced during the challenge.

"I found it really good. It also gave myself more confidence and helped to raise awareness about diabetes too."

The funds raised by Christine and others participating in the Swim22 Challenge contribute to ongoing research, education, and support services for individuals living with diabetes. Her story stands as an inspiration for others contemplating similar fundraising challenges.

As Christine continues her commitment to diabetes awareness and support, she encourages others to take on challenges like Swim22.
