New advice issued for Dexcom G6 Sensor users

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has released new advice for any Dexcom G6 Sensor users who may be experiencing irritation to their skin around their adhesive patch.

The MHRA is aware that barrier creams or patches are being used by some patients to help manage skin irritation around the site of their device. It's possible that the use of barrier products like these could affect your device's performance.

Some users of this continuous glucose monitoring system have experienced adverse skin reactions at the site of the adhesive patch. Symptoms can include redness, swelling and blistering. For certain users this is a skin hypersensitivity reaction rather than an irritation reaction, according to the MHRA.

The MHRA has released new advice to help patients and health care professionals manage any skin irritation without disrupting the performance of the device itself.

The MHRA have issued the following actions for users of the sensors:

  • If you are experiencing skin reactions, contact your healthcare professional for advice to determine if continued use of this device is suitable
  • Report skin reactions to the device manufacturer and to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme.

For clinicians, the MHRA have issued the following advice:

  • Identify patients who have reported or may be experiencing skin reactions, which may include erythema, itching and blistering
  • Consider if continued use of this device for patients with skin reactions is suitable
  • Consider use of alternative glucose monitoring systems for these patients
  • Report skin reactions to the device manufacturer and to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme.

And remember, our helpline team are here to talk things through. If you use a Dexcom G6 Sensor yourself, or are a health care professional with patients who use one, do give us a call on 0345 123 2399 to speak to one of our highly trained advisors about any concerns you may have.
