Type 2 diabetes project launches in Lincolnshire

Health chiefs and Diabetes UK have joined forces to launch an innovative project in Lincolnshire which aims to transform the lives of people living with Type 2 diabetes.

The four Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in Lincolnshire, responsible for planning health services for more than 617,000 people across the county, are working together to support people living with Type 2 diabetes.

Over the next two years the project is set to reach more than 16,000 people living with the condition with eight living with diabetes days, thousands of information packs and new peer support local groups.

The first event will be held during Diabetes Week.

"This is a fantastic project which will go right to the heart of getting to grips with helping people across Lincolnshire manage their Type 2 diabetes."

Peter Shorrick, Diabetes UK Midlands regional head

“This chronic condition can lead to serious and life-threatening complications if not managed well," continued Peter.

“We know how important it is for people to have access to education, information and support in a way which is most beneficial to them.

“Most people living with the condition spend around three hours a year with a health care professional, so understanding the condition and learning how to live well with it the other 8,757 hours per year is vital.

“This joined-up approach to supporting people living with Type 2 diabetes is revolutionary and I implore people living with Type 2 diabetes in Lincolnshire to get involved.”

"Being diagnosed with diabetes can feel overwhelming, but through this project there is a wealth of support to help. If you are at all worried about your diabetes don’t hesitate to speak to your GP or specialist nurse."

Dr Vindi Bhandal, GP and Chair of South West Lincolnshire CCG

"It’s also important to remember that you’re not alone and this innovative approach can provide great help and can give you the opportunity to express how you’re feeling in a safe space and connect with others in a similar position,"  added Dr Bhandal.
