Volunteers needed to help Tunbridge Wells parents run vital Diabetes UK group

Committee Member

The Tunbridge Wells Area Parents Support Group for Diabetes UK is looking for new members, including people to fulfil two key committee positions.

The group plays a vital role in helping young people living with diabetes in Tunbridge Wells and surrounding areas.

The group needs a new chair and a new treasurer who can help it run smoothly by taking charge of meetings, leading on activities and representing Diabetes UK in the community.

Bron Griffiths, current Treasurer of the group, said:

“Our group was set up to offer peer support to families with children with type 1 diabetes.

“When your child is diagnosed, it can be a confusing and difficult time and being able to talk to others who have been through the same experience can provide comfort and support and even practical advice.

“We are also there to support families as they continue their journey with type 1 diabetes, with regular face-to-face get-togethers for parents as well as organised events for the children, for example, the splash about session at the local swimming pool, at the local climbing centre and so on. For some of the children, attending one of these events is the first time they meet other children with type 1 and it can make a big difference.

“We aim to bring together families and children living with diabetes to share our experiences, good and bad, in the hope that we can all learn from each other.”

Nicola Davis, Kent healthcare professional and Diabetes Youth Worker, said:

“The peer support that Tunbridge Wells Area Parents Support Group provides is a safe space for the parents to connect and talk to other parents about their challenges, feelings and own experiences of children living with diabetes.

"They provide emotional support and the parents are understood by other parents in the same situation, in turn, this helps to reduce parental distress.”

Charlotte Burford, Engaging Communities and Volunteering Manager at Diabetes UK, said:

“The Tunbridge Wells group is a wonderful example of families getting together to help each other. Over the years, the group’s contribution has been immense and hugely positive.”
