NHS England have announced a £40 million national fund to improve diabetes care. This is a major success for diabetes care in England and means that Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) can bid for funds to improve care and services where it is needed most in their area.
CCGs can apply for money to fund projects in these areas:
- improving attendance at diabetes education courses
- improving access to diabetes inpatient specialist nursing teams
- improving access to a foot care team for people with diabetic foot disease
- improving the achievement of NICE recommended targets.
The national fund follows the announcement that diabetes is now a national priority by NHS England. Diabetes UK has been working closely with NHS England to make sure that the improvement fund is used effectively to improve diabetes care. We are really pleased that our calls to make diabetes a national focus have been listened to, and we'll keep up the pressure to make sure that diabetes remains a priority.
Keep an eye out on NHS England's website for updates, or you can get in touch with your local Diabetes UK team for more info on what's going on in your area.
