Thanks for emailing us.  You have said that you are worried that something bad will happen when you sleep.  Its not nice going to bed feeling upset or scared and there is no need for you to feel worried about going to sleep.

I'm not that sure about what you think may happen when you go to sleep but maybe you are worried about having a hypo which is when you blood sugar can go very low and make you feel a bit weird.  Having a hypo never feels very nice and its something that should not happen to you very much, if it is happening a lot you can tell your mum or dad or person that takes care of you to talk to your diabetes nurse about this who can stop it.

If you are worried that you might have a hypo at night and not be able to give yourself some sugar as you are asleep, don't worry! Your body is very amazing, even if you are asleep, a message is sent to your brain that it is having a hypo and it needs some sugar.

There are organs inside your body which make sugar and keep it ready so that even if you cannot eat any sugar because you are asleep your body then lets out this sugar so that you are well and OK! In a way your body is looking after itself even if for whatever reason you cannot!  You may wake up feeling very groggy and tired but will be OK!  So please don't feel worried about going to sleep!

Please do talk to your parents or an adult that helps to look after you about how you feel and about any worries you have as they can help you!

We do hope this has been helpful but please do get in touch with us again if you need to. You can also call the Careline on the number below if you would like to talk things through.
