Rhyl’s new mayor chooses Diabetes UK Cymru as charity of the year

Cllr Ellie Chard, the new mayor of Rhyl, has announced that she will be supporting and raising funds for Diabetes UK Cymru during her year in office.

Cllr Chard was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1980. She quickly became an active supporter of Diabetes UK Cymru, and was the secretary of the local support group for more than 20 years.

Cllr Chard became a town councillor in 2011 and was elected to Denbighshire County Council in 2017.

We are delighted that Cllr Chard has chosen us as one of her charities of the year, alongside breast cancer support charity The Treasure Chest.

Giving something back

Cllr Chard said: “It is an honour to be elected as mayor, particularly at a time when the town is undergoing so much positive change.

“I became a councillor to give something back to the community so over the next 12 months I’ll be looking to support the many local groups who do such great work in Rhyl and hope to visit as many of them as I can.

“Back in 1980 when I was first diagnosed with diabetes, the hospital matron told me to get in touch with Diabetes UK as they would give me the help I needed. She was right and by supporting the charity this year I am able to give something back.”

We are looking forward to working with Cllr Chard this year. Thank you so much for your support!
