My name is Hannah Amelia McKay. I am 26-years-old and live in Aberdeen, Scotland. To most people I look like a normal, healthy adult but this is not the case. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in May 2015.
It came as a massive shock and I’m not ashamed to admit that there were a lot of tears and a little bit of panic as I realised my life had changed forever. I quickly decided that the best thing to do was to accept what had happened and to take control. Despite this decision it hasn’t always been easy and I can often struggle.
I decided to take part in Swim22 because I want to challenge myself. I want to not only be healthier, fitter, and stronger but also to help others.
The advice and information I got from Diabetes UK when I was first diagnosed was a huge help and I want to do my part and give something back to support the wonderful work they do. I hope that completing this challenge will be the kick start I need to take back proper control of my diabetes and my life.
If you are thinking about taking on the Swim22 challenge, but aren’t sure yet I would say ‘Go for it!’ and have fun doing it. It doesn’t matter if you swim every week or you haven’t been near a swimming pool in years. Whether you are a ‘fitness fanatic’ or a bit of a ‘couch potato’. You can do it! We are all in this together and I believe that together we can do amazing things.
