Insulin pump therapy for adults and children with Type 1 diabetes

Insulin pump therapy is associated with improved glycaemic control, reduction in severe hypoglycaemia and improved quality of life in general.

Our position statement on insulin pump therapy recommends that it should be available to all adults and children who meet the NICE/SIGN criteria. The variation in availability of insulin pump therapy between centres must be addressed and appropriately trained teams of healthcare professionals must be available locally to initiate and supervise insulin pump therapy across all UK nations.

We developed this position through reviewing the relevant literature on insulin pump therapy, reviewing current data on insulin pump usage and reviewing national guidelines on pump therapy. We also held discussions with expert clinicians through Diabetes UK’s Council of Healthcare Professionals and expert diabetes clinicians.
