Researchers at the University of Birmingham are recruiting people aged 75-90 years old and living with type 2 diabetes to see if pre-meal protein drinks can improve blood sugar levels.
Following a screening visit at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, you will be provided with two supplements to take before your own meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at home over two 7-day periods.
During these periods, you will wear a continuous glucose monitor to measure blood sugar levels, alongside an activity monitor, and keep a diet diary. This will allow for an accurate comparison of blood sugar levels between the two supplements. Urine samples will be collected after both 7-day periods to compare nitrogen levels.
The study involves a maximum of 3 short visits (1 hour) and 2 longer visits (5 hours) to the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham. During the longer visits, blood samples will be taken (via a cannula) after you take the pre-meal supplements and eat a controlled breakfast. This is to understand the links between changes in insulin and appetite hormones and the different supplements.
You will be reimbursed £200 via bank payment for your time and will have the opportunity to learn about your blood sugar levels. We are also offering an additional £20 Amazon Voucher if you wish to share your thoughts on the feasibility of the pre-meal supplementation.
