“The system desperately needs a robust and uncompromising attack on the causes of type two diabetes and resolute support for those with type one.” – Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a public health issue
Around 90 per cent of all people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which is closely linked to obesity whereby there is strong evidence to suggest it is preventable. Diabetes and related complications cost the NHS £10 billion a year, representing 10 per cent of the annual budget for England and Wales. With the number of patients expected to rise to 4.6 million by 2030, the healthcare system faces a serious challenge.
Prevention is better than cure
The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that type 2 diabetes can be prevented by 30 minutes of daily moderate exercise and a healthy diet. A key challenge is raising awareness and engaging the community to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle. If we want people to adopt healthier lifestyles, we have to make it easier for them to do so.
