NHS England announced a £40m national fund to improve diabetes services in four priority areas:
- Improving the uptake of structured education for people with diabetes
- Improving the achievement of the NICE recommended treatment targets
- New or expanded multi-disciplinary footcare teams (MDFTs)
- New or expanded diabetes inpatient specialist nursing services (DISNs)
The call to bid for improvement money for diabetes is now live on theNHS Egland website.

CCGs will need to submit their application forms to NHS England by and will be notified of the decisions in March.
This improvement funding follows the launch of NHS England’s CCG Improvement and Assessment Framework (CCG IAF), which assesses CCGs on attendance of structured diabetes education and attainment of treatment targets. The results are available on MyNHS.
Diabetes UK was involved in developing the CCG IAF and we have been working closely with NHS England to ensure the new improvement funding is used effectively. We are pleased that our calls for a greater national focus on diabetes have been acted upon by NHS England – and we’ll keep up the pressure to ensure diabetes remains a priority for the NHS.
